Folk Art Carving by Theodore Mailette of Westbrook, NH

A macabre yet compelling image of a finely dressed man who has just chopped off the head of another man who looks much more at home in the woods.  Was he beheaded with his own axe?  The details of the dress and axe point to the early 1800s.  The city dweller has a long coat with tails, gloves, boots and a fine handlebar moustache.  His victim looks to have a work coat, boots and gloves.  Both figures have brass tack eyes.  They are carved of pine with a natural finish highlighted with some stain and covered with an old varnish.  The standing figure is 9 3/4" tall.  His dead friend was taller!  His body alone in 9" long.  Overall the piece is 16 1/4" tall, 6" wide and 10 1/2" tall.
