 Lightning rods from large buildings

In the same way that lightning rods were used on houses and barn in rural America,  many large buildings in the cities have them even today.  Here are two examples each with multiple points.  In theory, the more points the more evenly static electricy will be bled off there by reducing the chance of a lightning strike.  The top example has 7 points on top of a wooden ball that is mounted on a stone plinth.  The second piece has 6 points and is on a modern base.  They both date to about 1850.  The small item is a typical lightning rod finial included for scale.
