L.H.Newell Pennellograph

This is a large, whole-plate pennellograph of an austere woman circa 1860-1875.  The pennellograph process is a rare hand-coloring technique that was applied to tintypes.  The surface of the image was stenciled and then layered with hand colored tinted carbons.  Each pennellograph was sealed due to the fragile nature of the image surface and stamped on the back "Do Not Remove the Glass".  See a copy (below) of the stamped seal on the back of this pennellograph.  The person framing this piece took a photo of the stamped seal before he covered it with backing.  The photo measures approximately 6" by 8" making it a full plate.  Framed it is 12 3/4" by 14 3/4".
